Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who discontinue new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing such treatments should be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Experts believe the mode of action of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Users who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful return of cravings.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is higher among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
